KNNELIYA

KANNELIYA
Sri Lanka along with Western Ghats of India is recognized as one of the 25 global ‘hotspots’ of biodiversity (Myers,et al. 2000). Similarly, the rich human culture of Sri Lanka spanning over two millennia primarily in an agricultural setting has resulted in an equally rich indigenous agricultural biodiversity and associated cultural diversity. lronically however, the rich indigenous biodiversity as well as the increasing human population density are disproportionately concentrated in the southwest of Sri Lanka. Kanneliya forest reserve is located in the southwestern part of Sri Lanka about 35km northeast of Galle. It covers 5309 ha of forest area in the western part of Sri Lanka. The natural vegetation of kanneliya is the lowland wet evergreen forest, which is a climax forest forest formation dominated by the Doona (Shorea- Dipterocarpus Mesua association) There is a high proportion of endemism among the 234 identified woody tree species, with 141 being endemic to Sri Lanka Totally there are 301 plant species found in this Forest. Some 133 faunal species with 59 birds, 14 amphibians,32 butterflies, 7 snakes, 10 mammals, 7 fish and 4 reptiles have been recorded in Kanneliya FR Species richness and biological diversity of flora and fauna have been reduced due to selective logging carried out in the period of 1960- 1980. As the result today Kanneliya Forest is seen as a secondary forest. Along with new conservation initiatives this forest seems to have got a reasonable regeneration and rich biodiversity as mentioned above.

SINHARAJA RAINFOREST

SINHARAJA RAINFOREST

SINHARAJA RAINFOREST
The Sinharaja forest is the only undisturbed rain
forest left in Sri Lanka. It is about 9000 hectares in
extent. Many of the plant are very rare. Over60%
of the tree species are found only in the lowland w
-e t zone of Sri Lanka. If these species of trees are a
-llowed to get destroyed, the world would lose them
altogether. So it is important that much effort is me
to conserve this rich, valuable and fragile habitat.
The Sinharaja rainforest is the largest rainforest re
-serve in Sri Lanka. In 1840 Sinharaja became a crown
property. In 1988 the Sinharaja was made A National
Wilderness area. In 1989 UNESCO included the Sinhar
-aja Forest In the World Heritage list, as the first Natio
-nal Heritage of Sri Lanka.
The Sinharaja forest is home to many rare animals,
bird,butterflies,insects, reptiles and trees.Ferns and m
-osses grow well as the climate is hum-id because of He
-avy rainfall.

my village

untitled-1-copy1Village Story

Opatha   is a remote village situated in the southern part of Sri Lanka and it belongs to the Thawalama division in Galle district. In the former set up   it was a part of Hinidum Patthu . It is surrounded by beautiful mountains. A vast stretch of green tea estates and paddy fields are two of the attractions.  Ugudu dola and Hulanda-ela  stream flow away with glistening water through the green fields .This village seems calm and quiet and there are about three thousand and two hundred of population .  It is divided in to four Gramasewa   areas   as   North, South, East and West
Today   the population is increasing in this area because of the job opportunities that are from the tea plantation. Most of the people have privilege   lives   having   electricity   light, water supply and telephone facilities etc.
The main road is to access this village is Udugama-Akuressa road. There are good roads as well
